Like dusting off an old tome found in an ancient burial chamber in the Nordic regions, Árstíðir Lífsins plays the epics of their forfathers exactly as they should be told in the modern age. The first half of this set of albums, Saga á tveim tungum I: Vápn ok viðr, the band’s fourth effort opens up with a barrage of screams, blasts and furious war-torn black metal, eventually evolving into chants and cleans. This band prides themselves on their usage of classic and traditional instruments from Vibraphone, piano, viola, cello and the organ, creating a dense atmosphere for the sonic purist. All three members use their wide ranges on this record to create a massive choir spanning multiple octaves that rest on top of the music, whether it is in full black metal swing or droning melodicism. No words can accurately describe this listening experience, which is best enjoyed with both parts.
