While many bands change their style over time, few have gone through as drastic of a change as Katatonia. Starting as a death/doom project, Katatonia later became a household name in the scene as a Gothic doom band. Marking the band’s seventh studio album and the one that would later become known as their breakout record, The Great Cold Distance is everything that Katatonia had been building to at the time of it’s release originally in 2006. Hypnotic guitars and soft, somber melodies paired against the massive crashing waves of the drops make for a formidable listen. Not only are the guitars always playing some sort of hauntingly beautiful melody, but the lead vocals provided by Jonas have never sounded more clear and concise, narrating the soundtrack to depression in the most mournful way that one can in a poet’s way.
