While many bands change their style over time, few have gone through as drastic of a change as Katatonia. Starting as a death/doom project, Katatonia later became a household name in the scene as a Gothic doom band. Whilst Discouraged Ones, the album right before this marked the major change in the band’s sound, Tonight’s Decision refined that newfound sound and ran with the speeding locomotive. All the elements of the guitars remained the same though the new style of playing had changed very drastically, bringing back the death metal and opening up a very sorrowful gothic feel to it. Jonas’ clean singing takes the reigns in the front in varying octaves, often naked and despondent on top of the mix. While it sounds beautiful, the beauty cuts like a razor and this record will take up residence in your thoughts for many years to come from but a single listen.
