Masters of romance and gothic literature, My Dying Bride carved out a niche in the UK that would later grow to be and unstoppable force of doom metal known as Death Doom. Their almost reniassance take at the genre with eerie violins captivated people around the globe for years and no album is a better showcase of their sound than their sophomoric record, Turn Loose the Swans. Though the album starts off with an almost 8 minute intro featuring spoken word, piano, synths and violin, the album immediately breaks into solemn, loud and moody chords that resonate deep within the soul. Vocals provided by Aaron Stainthorpe range anywhere from a screeching death rattle to melodic and smooth, calming the torrents between the storms. Every riff has a deliberate, methodical feel to it, be it if it is an interlude riff or a melodic verse, it fits exactly as it is meant to. Not many albums come close to achieving the title of “masterpiece”, but with the variations and mastery of their instruments, the band has crafted something that can easily hold a candle to the idea of something that would be called such a thing.
