Rising from the ashes of the thrash metal project, Carnivore, Brooklyn legends, Type O Negative are most well known for their long, romantic songs and deep bass vocals provided by frontman Peter Steele. While this is their third album, and the second with all new material, the band take no time changing up the formula entirely, leaving behind the gritty atmosphere and punk attitude of the previous releases, Slow, Deep and Hard and the mock-live recording, Origin of Feces. This album is where the definitive sound of Type O Negative came from, from the romantic serenades of “Christian Woman” to the dark and mysterious “Black No. 1” and even the fast paced and punchy “We Hate Everyone”. Peter Steel’s voice ranges from Tenor to deep bass, contrasted with a loud, driving bass that cuts over the overdriven guitars, which harmonize with the various synths and dynamic drums. Easily going down in metal history as one of the most unique bands, Bloody Kisses remains a relic in the past that should be in everyone’s collection.
